ROBERT THURMAN AND MATTHEW FOX: CULTIVATING PEACE IN DIFFICULT TIMES

Join us for an evening with renowned scholars Matthew Fox and Robert Thurman in this discussion on what we can do to help further the causes of peace in troubled times. Dr. Thurman and Reverend Fox have written many books on Buddhism, Christian mysticism, and Creation spirituality and are fierce advocates of justice, equality, and creative approaches to solving the spiritual and social crises in the current time. Dr. Thurman will also be signing copies of his new graphic novel, A Man of Peace: The Illustrated Life Story of the Dalai Lama of Tibet. And Rev. Fox will be signing his latest book, A Way to God: Thomas Merton’s Creation Spirituality Journey. Isa Gucciardi, Ph.D., Founding Director of the Sacred Stream, will moderate the discussion.

Matthew Fox and philosopher of living systems David Korten discuss "What Connects Us-and Why Is It Important?" at the IONS Conference: The Science of What Connects Us, being held July 20-23 in Oakland, CA

The dialogue takes place Thursday, 7/20 and is free with conference registration; additional fee for general public

Fox and Korten will explore how to translate a spiritual awakening into a societal transformation that is sustainable, respects all creation as sacred, and leaves no one behind. The frontiers of science suggest that matter as a thing-in-itself is an illusion and that only relationships are real. By this reckoning, our understanding of relationship holds the key to understanding reality, the purpose and possibilities of creation, and humanity’s place in creation’s unfolding. We will explore the levels of being human that unite all people and for which a new civilization must make room. What does it look like to be true to our deepest humanity and to be in kinship with all our relations?

The Rev. Dr. Matthew Fox and artist Ullrrich Javier Lemus will be speaking at the Cathedral on Saturday, April 22nd.  The topic will be “Earth Day Every Day:  A Conversation of Art and Spirituality”.  Matthew will interview Javier on his ecologically inspired art pieces entitled “The Green Man”, “The Cosmic Christ”, and “The Black Madonna”.  This beautiful artwork will be hung in the Cathedral for all to enjoy. 

The evening begins at 6:30pm with guest guitarist Alex Chaney, Matthew and Javier at 7:00pm with a reception to follow.  

Donation cost is $15, available through Eventbrite.  Tickets will also be available at the door.
